Employment issues are often complex in any industry. This results in the need to create sets of rules and regulations governing employment. These rules must comply with laws and standards governing how employees are hired, fired, and treated while working for an employer.
At the same time, the regulation of employment should take into account a wide range of factors, which is why medium to large sized organizations need to create a special department to deal with these issues.
The Human Resources (HR) department needs to work with local, state/province and federal laws on employment as well as the unique set of rules and requirements of the organization itself. In total, they help regulate the hiring of employees and how they work on the job.
HR employees should be familiar with the following issues:
Recruiting
Hiring
Relationship policy
Remuneration of employees
Equal rights and employment equity
Dismissal (firing) policy
Suspension
Assessment of employment
Promotions
Employment and labor laws
Human resource specialists are engaged in a variety of issues, therefore need a wide range of knowledge. Moreover, they are responsible for ensuring that employees understand company policies and their rights as workers for the company.
Regular training is needed through courses as well as knowledge tests to ensure HR specialists are up to date on laws and policies as well as best practices.
All these skills of an HR specialist are key to the running of a successful company. The lack of knowledge in these areas can lead to conflicts in the workplace, employee turnover and legal problems.
