A person with an expertise with child abuse can be brought in to help establish facts and draw appropriate conclusions. It is a delicate task.

Child abuse experts can advise on issues related to child psychology, child psychiatry, adolescent psychiatry, clinical care, pediatrics, social work, criminology, developmental disabilities, and child development. They can also be involved in criminal investigations or to help ensure school safety.

Experts on child abuse can be confronted with a variety of mental illnesses that can be linked to past abuse. Examples include emotional disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and suicidal thoughts. One areas a child abuse expert is engaged is to give a psychological assessment of the presence of damage to the psyche of the child and the reasons why it formed.
